On 19 March 2015 an art-for-architecture proposal was submitted for the new buildings of the Landes-Feuerwehrschule (Fire Service School) for the state of Baden-Württemberg in Bruchsal. Under the title Feuerfresser (Fire Eater), a proposal was made for a coloured drawing attached to the ceilings of the training and office building.

Proposal:
The concept of the Fire Eater relates to one of the two locations of the tender, the air space in training and office building no. 2. As the complexity of the idea requires development work that cannot be done by drawing sketches, but has to be carried out in three dimensions from the beginning, the concept sketch consists of a photo of the first, provisional model.
Content:
The Fire Eater represents in a greatly simplified form the stark contradiction between fire and the means of extinguishing it – or in general between the catastrophe and protection against the catastrophe. Not the elements but their energy, their effect and their significance are depicted. The task for which future fire-fighters are prepared in this school building is thus dramatised and therefore elevated in status, which gives stronger identification to those who enter this building.
Relationship to the architecture:
The numerous lines that make up the Fire Eater are written into the air space of the building. They are suspended in this space and relate to the structure of the building in that they are attached to the ceilings of each storey. The basic element of the straight line corresponds to the formal vocabulary of the architecture. The different diagonals and the colour constitute a clear contrast to the architectural surroundings.
Structure:
Despite the varied directions in which the many lines run, all of them take the diagonal as their theme and thus establish a dynamic. Diagonals rising from below to above meet diagonals falling from above to below as if in a collision . The centripetal forces make the core of the air space rather than the boundaries into the central location of the activity.
Perception:
Thanks to the overlapping and interpenetration of the lines, the Fire Eater presents the viewer with a different and new image from every position. This gives the object a cinematic dimension. The delicate composition of lines deprives the space of no light at all.
Implementation:
The Fire Eater consists of light aluminium tubes with a diameter of 50 mm, wet-coated with paint.
