In early June 2016 an art-for-architecture proposal was submitted for a competition relating to the new operation centre for Munich University Clinic in Gross-Hadern, Munich. A supporting wall, 2.30 m high, placed in front of the façade of the operation centre, is punctuated by drive-in entrances and stairs, and with its total length of over 200 m extends beyond the width of the building. This situation is an opportunity for a continuous mural with extreme proportions.

The idea:
The long supporting wall in front of the new operation centre is a stroke of luck for the appearance of the building: the wall can be interpreted as a threshold. An operation is always a threshold, over which a patient passes on the way to being healed. In this sense the artistic “Healing Threshold” concept is an invitation to pass over the threshold. The resources of mural painting give a positive charge to the threshold. It becomes a perspective, a promise. The threshold appears accessible. It forms a flowing transition with narcotic associations. Narcosis, as an immanent component of the operation, is realised not as a violent anaesthetic but as a gentle, healing sleep. By means of its formal language and colour narrative, the wall transmits to patients the signal that they have been received safely and are in good hands. It has a calming effect and dispels fears.
The execution:
The Healing Threshold is placed directly on the exposed concrete in acrylic paint. The paint is applied in homogeneous areas covering the ground. The areas of colour are bounded by straight, precise contours, because painstaking exactitude is a criterion for successful operations. The chosen material is Lascaux Artist paint, with its high quality and resistance to fading. The coating of paint is sealed by a UV-protective layer and additionally with anti-graffiti protection. Lascaux Artist paint, as experience shows, is extremely easy to restore in the case of later staining or damage.
