In mid-July a proposal was submitted for a competition held by the municipality of Meissen. It concerns an art object in a public space, the roundabout at Moritzburger Platz, to relate to Meissen’s seven twin towns. These are Arita (Japan), Legnica (Poland), Leitmeritz (Czech Republic), Corfu (Greece), Fellbach (Germany), Vitry-sur-Seine (France) and Provo (USA).

The concept:
Meissen turns towards its twin towns. An arch-shaped surface represents this building of bridges in simple geometrical reduction. Each bridge arch has an individual destination: one of the twin towns somewhere in the world. The first letter of the town is added to the bridge arch, making it a symbol that provides meaning. Seven bridge arches evoke the seven towns and together form a sculptural object similar to a wreath. Each bridge arch points to a different part of the compass. The exact orientations that lead to the twin towns can be seen from the object. This produces an irregular, lively fan shape. The colour gradations enhance the impression of diversity. The colouration as a whole creates a vivid magnet for the eyes. When a car drives around the roundabout, the fan principle generates a cinematic effect.
The individual bridge arches consist of steel sheets, cut by laser and painted with Lascaux Artist acrylic paint, with additional coatings for protection against UV light and graffiti.
