In the second half of October 2019 a proposal was submitted for the art-for-architecture competition of the Transfusion Centre of Mainz University. The competition called for a façade design on the end wall of this new building, which is open to the public for medical transfusions. The subject of the visual interpretation is “Multi-Transfusion”.
Multi-Transfusion
Transfusion supplies blood and components of blood to the human body. Therefore: an image of dynamic paths. At the same time, an image of the absorbing body.
Transfusion is a factor for life, sometimes even a life-saving factor.
Therefore: an image full of life, and even more a dramatisation of the life force.
Transfusion conveys various blood groups and various components of blood.
Therefore: an image of variety – various colours, various paths.
Transfusion is a medical activity concentrated in the Transfusion Centre.
Therefore: an image of concentration, of the parallel, of synchronicity.
Transfusion is the way to a goal. Therefore: an image of goal-orientation, pressing beyond the limits of the façade into open space.
The proposal “Multi-Transfusion” is an image with multiple layers of content that communicates itself spontaneously, strikingly and memorably. From a distance it generates the effect of a conspicuous signal, from close up a suggestive attractive power.
The “Multi-Transfusion” proposal is a mural, assembled from several components. Aluminium sheets (150 x 100 cm) are painted with highly fade-resistant artist’s acrylic paint (Lascaux Artist) and given an additional coating for protection against UV light. Each sheet is attached to the wall at several fixing-points. There is a gap between the sheets and the wall of approx. 8 cm so that the striking outer edge of the mural casts a visible shadow and increases the spatial presence of the image. The individual sheets touch each other without a gap. From the usual distance of a beholder, the join between them will not be visible, but will be optically suppressed by the intense colour.
