At the end of January 2020 the concept “The Eggies Are Coming” was submitted to a competition for LahnEggs kindergarten in Lahnstein. The task was to make a design for the outside wall of the room in which the children’s means of transport are stored, in front of the kindergarten. The name LahnEggs refers to the egg-shaped floor plans of the group rooms, a distinguishing architectural feature of this new building.

The shape of the egg, which the children experience in the rooms and which is familiar to them, breathes life into the LahnEggs kindergarten. In this way, the egg is a point of reference and identification for the children and for the nursery teachers. The Eggies art concept is an animation of the egg. Eggies are creatures like chicks, drawn from egg shapes. Both the head and the rump are closed egg-shapes.
The beak and feet are part-forms derived from the egg.
In this way, the cycle of identification goes full circle: child – egg – Eggie. The Eggies are lovable, fun creatures whom the children accept as companions and playmates. Going to the kindergarten means going to the Eggies. Just like the children, the Eggies consist of six groups – identifiable by their colours. They constitute a lively procession around the walls of the store room: the Eggies are coming. Just as the children come every morning.
The Eggies concept can be extended, as the Eggies provide a symbol and a system of symbols for the LahnEggs kindergarten. To distinguish between the groups, coloured Eggies can be used, for example on the doors leading to the group rooms and on the nursery teachers’ T-shirts. There are no limits to the ways in which the Eggies can be incorporated into the daily life of the kindergarten.
