The multi-level car park at the Round Tower in Andernach was built around a middle. This middle part has remained a vacuum up to now. The intention is to make it into a focus through art, to make the character of Andernach visible in a concentrated and coherent form.

This form is a spiral stair leading upwards, corresponding to the spiral structure of the building with its ramps for driving up and down. The spiral line of movement connects individual steel profiles of varying heights – short ones (stumps) and longer ones (stelae).

The stumps appear to be traces of an infrastructure, referring to the excavations. The stelae close to form a circle, referring to the Round Tower. The modern aesthetics refer to the present-day dynamism of Andernach. In this way, the spiral becomes a line of movement that makes the development of Andernach legible.

The spiral shape converts the “one after the other” nature of the historical sequence into a “one inside the other” in which the immanence of the relationships is evident. A multiplicity becomes a whole – the “Fokus Andernach”.

The upward force of the progressive spiral form has an eruptive character and refers to the volcanic activity and the geyser of Andernach.

In this way Fokus Andernach summarises several concepts:
excavations – the Round Tower – modernity – volcanic activity.
These facets of its content merge into an independent overall form that gives a significant middle to the multi-storey car park.

The architecture of the car park demands an art object with little spatial volume in order to retain the feeling of light and air. With its slenderness, the spiral shape corresponds to this. The architecture also demands a strong colour feature. The spiral meets this requirement through the alternation of two intense shades of red.
