In early January 2022 a proposal was submitted for an art-for-architecture competition for the Frauenlob-Gymnasium, a high school in Mainz. This involves an artistic design for a stairwell wall and optionally an external façade. The concept entitled “Aufgaben beflügeln” (“tasks take flight”) aims to give a meaningful image to the subject of school.

To learn means to follow the lessons. This constitutes a collective achievement. Equally, to learn means to solve tasks – tasks at school and tasks at home. Here the emphasis shifts from collective to individual achievement. This is the substance that is represented by the mural and explored in the manifold facets of its meaning.
The collective is represented by a structure of common formal language, common rhythm and common colour mood. Individuality is represented by individual elements within the structure, which each possess their own perspective and direction of movement, and are shown in gradations of colour. The task is represented by a perspective rectangle, evoking associations of a sheet of paper for working, an exercise book or a book. Finally, the idea that the task takes flight is represented in that every individual element and thus the whole structure seems to float and fly away. This conveys lightness and light-heartedness. In this way, the meaning of the task gains greater value. The tasks of everyday schooling are not only work and duty, but at the same time are inspiration, insight, fulfilment and ultimately joy.
The image is shifted to the upper left corner of the surface, and thus appears to transcend the boundaries of the wall. This produces a further facet of content: the motif of widening horizons – non scholae sed vitae discimus. The background colour of the interior wall is light blue. This visually brightens the grey wall. The background colour of the exterior wall is yellow. This lends a warm, light-filled character to the façade.
