In early August a proposal was submitted to the art-for-architecture competition for the Petersberghalle in Gau-Odernheim. A mural entitled “Hand-Ballett” made from lasered and painted aluminium sandwich panels is to be attached to the wood-covered end wall.

The Petersberghalle in Gau-Odernheim is a multi-purpose hall. During cultural events, spectators directed their gaze to the stage, whereas the rear wall mainly attracts attention when a goal is scored in a game of handball. For this reason, the theme that inspires the design of the rear wall is sport. The design presents a dramatic scene from handball in a reduced formal vocabulary. This enlivens the hall. The active players and the spectators experience a sublimation of their sport.
The mural raises awareness of the aesthetics of handball. It enhances the sport, it enhances the hall, and it enhances every single sporting event. The mural reduces handball to its essentials – to movement, rhythm and a dynamic group experience. It also gives immediate expression to optimism and joy. The gestures in the game of handball are unrestrained and euphoric. This is the message of the mural: here handball reveals itself as a symbolic act for the positive aspects of life. The expressive potential of the brightly lit hall is confirmed.
The wooden structure of the hall supplies a dominant colour tone that communicates warmth and life. The mural is consistent in adapting to this chromatic atmosphere. Its radiant colours reinforce the warm tones and lend an experience of harmony to the space. The green of the attacking player adds an enlivening element to this. The mural is a symbol that can be used for communication of the Petersberghalle.
