The art concept for the Abenteuerland nursery school offers worlds of adventure to the children. They are given the opportunity to get involved themselves, to be active and to gain access to the essence of art. They learn that an image consists first of all of shapes and colours, and only acquires meaning for the eye that perceives it. But they also learn that an image that generates no meaning through its random arrangement can nevertheless be beautiful. This means they learn that there can be an aesthetic sense that brings pleasure.

The object consists of rotating rods that are attractive to touch. The children want to take hold of them and turn them. In doing this, they see changes in the image that appears on the rods. The rods, which have four edges, are painted on all four sides. As long as the rods remain in a random position, they display an image that seems abstract and has its own aesthetic attraction. This image can be infinitely altered, and constantly generates something new. The possibilities for the children to create abstract images in this way are inexhaustible.

However, as soon as the rods are placed in the same position, they produce a recognisable image. The children will quickly understand this and will purposefully look for the visual motifs. They are helped in this by the basic colour that occupies the full width of the motif at its lower edge. The four adventure motifs are: cave of treasure – jungle – outer space – ocean depths.

These motifs do not simply exist. They arise only when the children create them by placing the rotating rods in a specific position. This is a challenge that can captivate the children. Again and again. Here the children create art. The charm of this is that the children, small as they are, can create a huge image.
