At the end of August 2023, a proposal was submitted to an art-for-architecture competition at Schloss Burg near Solingen. Several sites for art were available in the outdoor grounds of the historic castle. Under the title “Turm-Labyrinth” (Tower Labyrinth) an interactive object in front of the castle wall was proposed.
The Turm-Labyrinth is a walk-through sculpture for a historic site that is itself a place, a museum through which visitors can walk. In this spirit the sculpture is a model representation of the whole site. Being a walk-through sculpture, the Turm-Labyrinth provides children, young people and adults too with a playful experience of searching for orientation. This makes it interactive. It issues a summons, both to be viewed and also to be used.
The Turm-Labyrinth is not only a model that adapts itself, but rather an antithesis that forms a contrast. Against the closed defensive nature of the building is set an inviting openness; against the massive walls, a delicate, light construction; against the rough stone, the smooth stainless steel. Formally the Turm-Labyrinth relates to the motif of the castle and equally to the motif of the tower. Each column of stainless steel is itself a slender tower. Together the columns form a whole stylised tower, but also a stylised castle composed of many towers. In this way the sculpture makes a clear statement. It sublimates the idea of the castle and shows the castle not as a historical relic but as a principle that transcends time: belonging, community and protection.
