At the end of August 2023, a proposal was submitted to an art-for-architecture competition for the new depot of the museums in Schwerin. Under the title “Zeit-Wände” (Time Walls) a walk-through sculpture was proposed for the free area in front of the building.
The idea:
The art object directly adopts the adjustable copper panels of the façade in their original size, 50 x 380 cm. Through this connection, the whole building is incorporated into the art and imbued with an additional message.
The colour:
The museum holdings in the depot illuminate historic time. This aspect of time is made visible in the changing colour of the copper. The art object makes this process its theme, from the fresh copper to the patina, and shows a before and after of the current state of the façade at all times.
The form:
The depot provides structured and categorised storage space. This characteristic is represented in the art object through fanning-out walls, producing a walk-through sculpture that is an invitation to take many different loops, to walk through time walls.
The material:
The object consists of 36 vertical steel plates, firmly screwed into foundations beneath the paving. These walls are painted with acrylic art paint, which ensures the highest degree of resistance to fading and durability.
