In early March 2024 a proposal was submitted to the art-for-architecture competition for the Rettichnest day nursery in Schifferstadt. An interactive art object is to be installed in a closely defined place in the outdoor area of the day nursery. The width and height are specified. For this purpose, a proposal entitled Regenbogen-Leiter (Rainbow Ladder) was developed.
The Rainbow Ladder is an opportunity for children of all ages in the nursery to perceive and to climb. It serves perception in that it appeals to the sense of colour, the behaviour of colours, the logic of colours, and dynamics of colours. The topos of the rainbow is after all very well known from children’s books and engages the imagination. It is an opportunity to climb, in that the children can easily ascend the many colour steps like a roof, sit on the roof ridge and then descend on the other side. For the smallest ones, who may not be able to keep up, the question is which colour step they can reach. The children can also try to swing up from below from one rung of the ladder to another – a real challenge.
The Rainbow Ladder object is visually distinct from all of the other playground equipment because it strongly attracts attention and makes a powerful statement. The diagonal responds to the cuboid architecture. The colour scale, like a chromatic musical scale, responds to the grey of the façade.
The distances between the rungs are set such that no hands or feet can get stuck, on the one hand, but also so that even the smallest child cannot fall through or be left hanging, on the other hand. The maximum height of a fall is within the norm limit of 2.50 m. For this, the protection against falling is adequate.
